Wentworth Woodhouse Grand Prix Cycle race Sunday 31st August:

Rolling Road Closures: What to Expect and Where.

The British Cycling have confirmed that there will be rolling road closures on Sunday, 31 August, during the event. These closures will be in effect during two main time slots:

09:15 – 12:15 (Women’s Grand Prix)

14:00 – 18:00 (Open Grand Prix)

The route is structured as multiple laps of approximately 20 km each. Here’s a breakdown of the key road segments covered by the race:

Key Route Segments and Timing (Open Grand Prix)

1. Exit Wentworth Woodhouse Estate Grounds  Cortworth Lane

2. Coaley Lane

3. Smithy Bridge Lane

4. Wath Road (bearing left)

5. Tingle Bridge Lane

6. Passes by the Milton Arms in Elsecar

7. Broadcarr Road (T-junction)

8. A6135

9. Harley Road

10. End of Hague Lane (return into the estate)

11. Repeat through lap points… and finished back at the estate.

These road names and sequence show where rolling road closures are likely to occur: as cyclists move through, marshals (and traffic management crews) will temporarily halt traffic at these points to maintain safety and traffic flow.

For Drivers and visitors

Expect intermittent delays on Cortworth Lane, Coaley Lane, Smithy Bridge Lane, Wath Road, Tingle Bridge Lane, Broadcarr Road, A6135, Harley Road, and Hague Lane, especially around 09:15–12:15 and 14:00–18:00.

Closures are rolling road blocks, traffic may be paused briefly as cyclists pass, but then reopened shortly after.

If your journey crosses any of these routes during those times, consider alternative routes, carpooling, or adjusting your schedule where possible.

For Spectators & Visitors

Prime viewing spots include:

Milton Arms, Elsecar

Entrance/exit of the Wentworth Woodhouse estate grounds

Key junctions such as Tingle Bridge Lane, Harley Road, or the start/finish zone in the estate.

Elsecar Heritage Centre remains a great vantage point and will have its usual amenities—but note that vehicle access to the front of house will be limited, and the e-bus will not operate during the event .

Quick Summary Table.

Time Slot Road Closures (Rolling road blocks) What to Expect

09:15–12:15 Cortworth Lane → … → Hague Lane (lap circuit) Short road holds as race passes

14:00–18:00 Same loop, repeated multiple times Increased frequency of rolling road closures

Tips

Plan ahead: If you’re driving, build a buffer into your journey, or use quieter roads.

If walking or cycling: Be alert to marshals and cyclists, particularly at crossing points.

Spectators: Enjoy the race safely—watch from designated spots and be mindful of restricted access.

Steampunk Weekend Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September: https://wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk/whats-on/steampunk-weekend   – This is a new event and a little early to advise on numbers on this one.

10k Road Race Sunday 5th Oct – this one has just come on our radar and information is not yet on our website – Rotherham Harriers and RMBC are delivering this new race using roads around Wentworth.  There will be some closing of roads for very short periods as we understand it.  We have asked the organisers to start early (9.30) so that Cortworth Lane, Wentworth will be open by 10.00.  There are likely to be between 500-800 runners.  The race is not going through the village other than Clayfields lane  and north Cortworth Lane with parking at WWH North Hill – this will have traffic management.
